Principal's Message January 2018

RMS updates and reminders for January 2018

1. Problem Solving procedures

Open communication between parents and teachers for the purpose of resolving concerns related to the child, the classroom, or the teacher is critical for educational success. It is important that parents contact a student’s teacher any time there is a report coming home from your child that makes you uncomfortable or wonder why an incident occurred.  Please start the conversation with these 3 key words: “help me understand.”  Home & school communication is important to us.  E-mail is typically the fastest way to communicate with staff members at RMS.

2. Please join us at our RMS Community Council meetings. Our RMS Community Council is a merging of our Site Council and Parent Connection (PTA) that serves all the students at Reeves Middle School.  Meeting topics include an administrative update regarding current events in the school & district, volunteer opportunities, fundraising efforts, and more.  This group needs more members to be the vibrant group that it is meant to be! The Community Council meets on the following dates from 6:00-7:30 pm in the RMS Library:

Wednesday, January 24th

Wednesday, March 7th

Wednesday, May 2nd

Wednesday, June 6th

3. Wednesday School has arrived.

As a supplement to our academic intervention efforts and our progressive discipline plan, Reeves Middle School will be implementing a twice-monthly “Wednesday School.”  This supervised session provides an alternative to in-school suspension and serves as a consequence for students who habitually disregard school rules.  For example, should a student progress in disciplinary steps, that student may be assigned Wednesday School from 2:05 pm to 5 PM.  The intent is to further underscore behavioral and academic expectations at our school as we continue to help students understand the importance of appropriate conduct and academic responsibility.  Parents will be contacted regarding arrangements for Wednesday School, including a 5:00 pick-up time to go home.

4. ASB Fundraiser Updated.  Our RMS Fundraiser started November 1st and has raised $2700 thus far!  We are doing a straight donation this year instead of partnering with a company and selling items. This change came about from feedback we received from our families. The ASB Fundraiser makes it possible to continue to offer our student initiated after school clubs, officials and equipment for athletics, music program activities, and assemblies. This money goes directly to fund our RMS student programs. Our goal is to reach $8,000.  Just click on the "Donate Now" button at the bottom of our webpage or this link: Donation Link for School Fundraiser.  Thank you for your support!

5. RMS achieved our goal for this year to bring in 6,000 cans for the annual Canned Food Drive.  Thank you for your generosity!

6. Yearbooks are on sale for $28 until February 2nd.  After that?  They go up in price, so order now!  You can secure your Yearbook by going to and then follow the instructions.  Simply click on Order Your Yearbook Today at the top of the page and then type Reeves Middle School.  Students receive the ordered yearbook in June, 2018.

7. Olympia Parks & Rec is hosting an open gym event at RMS on January 5th

from 3:15 to 5:00 PM.  This is FREE to all RMS students.  Basketball, Dodgeball, Volleyball and other gym games will be supervised by the Olympia Parks staff.

8. WINTER SPORTS: The next sports season for grades 7 and 8 includes girls’ soccer and boys’ basketball.  In order to clear for sports, students and parents must complete all the forms in the sports information packet and pay the $60 participation fee.

January 29th is the first day for winter practice.  7th & 8th graders participating in winter sports should bring shorts or sweatpants, a jacket (depending on weather), a t-shirt, and the proper shoes.  Practice typically runs from 3:05 to 4:40 PM.

Note: Sixth graders will be allowed to participate in track in the spring.
