Reeves Raider Report - February 5, 2023
Posted on 02/04/2023
Happy Sunday Reeves Families!

We have successfully made it through the first half of the school year. Tomorrow we not only start second semester, but we also begin our new bell schedule. We will move to an A/B schedule per week moving forward; A Schedule will be on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and B Schedule will be on Wednesday. A Schedule includes OT every day and will be after 4th period instead of in the morning. What is OT? OT, or Opportunity Time, is a chance for students to go to their classes where they need to get extra help, make up work, visit the library, go to a club, play games in the cafeteria or gym or take a break outside. We are hopeful that the extra two days a week of OT per week will give our students extra time to connect with teachers they need to.

With second semester comes the change of electives for many of our students! This is an exciting time. All 6th grade students and many 7th and 8th grade students will be switching. For our 6th graders, your elective that is not your music class will rotate. For 7th and 8th graders, if you are a currently in art, robotics, wood tech, PE or health, this class will switch. All students should check their schedule through Skyward and look at 3rd quarter. We will also do this again in first period tomorrow. For students that have PE this term and need a PE shirt, those can be purchased in the office for $8 each. Families can also call and pay for these over the phone.

This month we observe and celebrate Black History Month in our school. Our School Board has also proclaimed this week Black Lives Matter at School Week. At Reeves, black lives don’t just matter this week, they matter every day, every week, every month, all year long. We work hard to make our students of color feel welcome, comfortable and safe. As the white mom of a black daughter, I also know that we have so much work to still be doing. I challenge you to join me this month in learning more about the history of racism in America, read an anti-racist book or watch a film that will confront your view of race and culture. Being open to learning is the first step in making the world a better place for everyone.

Winter Season One sports will starts on Thursday, February 23rd and run through Thursday, March 30th. This season we will have Boys Basketball and Girls Soccer for 7th and 8th  graders. Practices will start right after school from 4:00 until 5:30. Practices are on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. We compete against Washington, Marshall, Jefferson and Griffin Middle Schools. If your student would like to participate, please register them through FamilyID. You will need to scan or take a picture of the current physical form from your device and upload it in the upload physical section of FamilyID. Physicals are good for 13 months from date of exam. Pay to Play fees can be made to our office by cash, check or credit card.

Families of 8th graders, the Yearbook Class is asking that you send in your student’s baby photo for the yearbook. Please email photos to Mr. Gunther at [email protected] and include your student’s name. Photos are due by February 28th. If you haven’t purchased a yearbook yet, you can do so by bringing a check to the office for $30 or you can call and pay over the phone.

The City of Olympia is hosting a Reeves Activity Night, a 90’s Friendship Dance!, on Friday February 10th.  This event will be from 6:30 - 8:30 at our school. It is open to Reeves students only. The cost is $7 to get in. If you have questions, please contact Luke at the City of Olympia at [email protected].

A huge thank you to our PTA who just funded a grant request for our Art teacher, Mrs. Ramsay. Our art room will soon be getting a kiln! This is so exciting for our school and students. We also want to thank the PTA for thoughtful treats they brought the staff last week. It was very thoughtful!

Have a wonderful week!
